How did you started your career as an object designer?

One day 3D graphics hobby led me to 3D simulation courses. In a year I became a designer and soon created a company that provides furniture and interior design services. At the beginning, I did not dream of individual projects, namely mass production. It was interesting to see my designs as an object, because before that, I created only visualization. It all began as a hobby, which then quickly turned into a job, from which I get enormous moral satisfaction.

Tell us about the “Sail” collection for MoDi. What is its concept and function?

The image that inspired the creation of this modular system is the sail, hence the name “Sail”. Objects that hover over the surface. And the main design accent of the collection is the seatback with a removable textile part. This item is functional and decorative at the same time. You can hide a book or tablet in it. It is easy to remove, it can be washed. Also, this solution allows you to change the color by combining it with other elements of the interior. The whole sofa is also easy to disassemble: seatback, legs, everything is folded in a box and easily transported. The line consists of a double sofa, a bed, a puff, an armchair, coffee tables and a peculiar chaise lounge. The whole system is modular and very variable. Elements are easily combined with each other and fit into various interior compositions.

How do the launch of a subject in mass production is conducted?

The first stage is an analysis of the market: what materials and forms are relevant. Next step is sketches and more sketches. 3D modeling is always performed personally by me. Then the first prototypes are created. As a rule, they are thoroughly tested, refined and modified. At this stage there is a lot of discussion and approvals. The situation may develop in different ways: the model either moves to the production stage, or is withdrawn altogether. It happens so. If the company created a prototype, tested it and decided it was unprofitable, the project could be stopped. It is important for designer and manufacturer to be not afraid of experiments, suggestions or changes. Very often the optimal solution is still there.

What, in your opinion, is the biggest design problem in Ukraine?

We definitely have good designers, but the problem is that most companies do not use their services and do not understand what kind of cooperation can be useful.

What would you recommend to young designers who are just starting their way?

The first thing to do is to form a portfolio and work out a name for you. Create several projects then place them on your site and in social networks both general and specialized. After you can think about starting cooperation with manufacturers. What concerning myself, I had a portfolio, participated in contests, received awards, and one day I managed to establish cooperation with the first company. After that, everything began to develop more actively.

How do you choose companies for joint projects?

I work with brands, with which we equally understand the basic things for me such as quality, professional ethics, aspiration for self-development. First of all, we communicate because it's important for me to understand for whom I am creating a design, their life, the way of thinking, values, goals and motivation of those people. Only after that I decide on a joint project.

What, besides talent and abilities, affects the success of a designer?

In any brunch to reach the success it is important to work a lot and do not stop. It is worth visiting specialized exhibitions, always finding time for self-education, tracking global processes in many areas. The most important thing for both the designer and the manufacturer is to remain persistent.
